Storing tulle between wears

Rolled, not folded, air humidity and the right hanger.

Storing tulle between wears

Store tulle flat or rolled on a spool, never folded into narrow creases for extended periods. Permanent creasing in one place weakens the mesh structure exactly along the fold line, and with more delicate types like illusion or gossamer, can over time create visible, permanent "crack lines" in the mesh.

Air humidity in the storage space matters: the recommended range is 45 to 55% RH. Higher humidity promotes mold growth, lower, below about 30% RH, increases static electricity in synthetic material.

Multilayered tulle dresses and veils are best kept in breathable covers, such as cotton or nonwoven, hung on a wide, padded hanger that distributes weight over a large surface. A narrow metal hanger causes local distortion at support points, visible later as permanent bulges.

Also avoid prolonged direct contact with uncoated wood and acidic cardboard. Organic acids migrating from these materials speed up yellowing of white tulle, as happens with other natural fibers.

Tulle static electricity increases below about 30% relative humidity. Antistatic spray or light water misting significantly reduces this effect, especially in winter when heating dries room air.

When to hand tulle over to professionals

Five situations where home methods aren't enough.

Home knowledge from this article is enough for most everyday situations, but has natural limits. The five situations below are a signal not to risk doing it yourself.

  1. Wedding dresses with multilayered tulle, which almost always coexist with lace, satin, boning or beads: choosing one cleaning method for all these materials at once requires specialist knowledge.
  2. Premium silk tulle, where zero tolerance for spin cycles and detergent pH mistakes means one error can be very costly for an expensive material.
  3. Permanent, deep wrinkles that developed after improper washing or drying, which a home steamer often can no longer fix.
  4. Organic stains older than a few days on light tulle, requiring analysis and selection of the appropriate enzyme or solvent.
  5. Visible structural damage, meaning tears and holes in the mesh, which require repair before washing, or they will mechanically enlarge during further processing.

It's also worth honestly stating where home method limits end.

  • Stiffening durability: stiffening spray and starch give an effect lasting usually 1 to 3 washes, compared to much more durable professional resin sizing.
  • Hard water: lack of access to softened or distilled water at home limits the effectiveness of removing mineral deposits responsible for "papery" stiffness after washing.

Multilayered dresses

One method selected for all materials at once: lace, satin and boning in the same dress.

More durable sizing

Professional resin sizing lasts longer than home spray or starch, which last 1 to 3 washes.

Under time pressure

Wedding, performance or competition doesn't leave room for error or time needed for home drying and rescue attempts.
