When Home Washing Isn't Enough: When to Use Professional Laundry for Nylon Items
Warning signs and the Gorące Żelazko laundry services in Lublin

You now have complete knowledge of how polyamide behaves: why it softens rather than scorches in heat, and why it yellows from chlorine and sun. You also know why tights get runs and why swimsuits lose elasticity over time. Time for a simple decision-making rule.
Most polyamide, that is tights, underwear, light sportswear, you can safely wash yourself by sticking to 30-40°C and a delicate program. However, there are cases that exceed the capabilities of your home washer and dryer: then it's really better to leave the job to professionals rather than risk ruining the item.
This guide shows exactly where that line runs and why it runs there.
What decides it: mechanism, not just the fabric's look
three phenomena that push nylon beyond what a home washer and dryer can handle
Polyamide melts at a specific, narrow temperature, rather than scorching gradually like cotton: PA6 already softens at 215-220 degrees, PA6.6 not until 255-265 degrees. That's why an iron set too hot can leave a permanent mark in a split second, one you can never undo.
Chlorine yellowing has a different cause: chlorine attacks the amide bonds that give the fiber its strength and oxidizes them into a yellowish tint. Ordinary washing won't reverse this, because the problem sits inside the fiber's structure, not on its surface.
Down jackets and sleeping bags have yet another issue: the down filling itself. A home dryer doesn't break clumped down back into individual tufts, so the insulation loses its warmth even after a properly done wash, which is why it needs a "down" program with a commercial drum dryer. Laminates and membranes, in turn, have a thin functional layer bonded into the fabric: the wrong detergent or overly aggressive spinning can peel it off or block its breathability.
Nylon: home or laundry
Tights and underwear
light everyday polyamide
Tights, stockings and light underwear usually handle a home wash fine at low temperature on a delicate program. This is the only category in this comparison where home washing is the rule, not the exception.
Down jackets and sleeping bags
nylon shell and down filling
The shell fabric itself washes easily, but clumped down loses its insulating power without proper drying. Without a commercial dryer and a "down" program you risk a jacket that never warms the way it used to.
Laminates and membranes
outdoor jackets, tents, technical gear
The membrane handles waterproofing, and the wrong detergent or overly aggressive spinning can damage it permanently. The effect only shows up at the first heavy rain, when the item starts to leak.
Large expedition gear
tents, bags, sleeping bags beyond washer capacity
Even a delicate fabric won't wash properly in a drum that's too small, because there isn't room for water to move freely. Large items, like an expedition tent or a bulky bag, simply outgrow a home washer by volume.
Warning signs that are easy to miss
a short checklist before you load nylon into a home washer
When to Take Nylon to the Laundry
Do
- Take down jackets or sleeping bags with polyamide coating to the "down" program with commercial dryer
- Report visible chlorine yellowing to professional stain removal
- Take items with laminates and membranes to the laundry instead of washing them yourself
- Take large items like tents or expedition bags exceeding home washer capacity
- Check the label for a no-chlorine symbol before reaching for any bleach
Don't
- Don't experiment with bleach on expensive technical jackets
- Don't iron unknown coatings without testing first on a hidden spot
- Don't dry down jackets without dryer balls in your home dryer
- Don't spin laminated or membrane jackets on your home washer's highest setting
Risk of melting under a hot iron
Unlike cotton, nylon doesn't scorch gradually, it melts suddenly within a narrow temperature range, below the typical iron setting for linen or cotton. Contact between a hot iron plate and nylon, even for a second, leaves a permanent, shiny mark that can never be undone.
How nylon gets cleaned at Gorące Żelazko laundry
three steps from assessing the fabric to a finished item
- 1
Assessing the fabric and label
Before choosing a program, the laundry checks the type of polyamide, whether there's a membrane or laminate, and the symbols on the label.
- 2
Choosing the wash program
Tights and underwear go into gentle washing, down jackets and sleeping bags into the specialist "down" program, and laminated items into a wash tailored not to harm the functional layer.
- 3
Drying and reproofing
Down dries in a commercial drum dryer with dryer balls that break up clumps. Jackets and sportswear can additionally get DWR reproofing.
At Gorące Żelazko laundry on ul. Wrońska 2 in Lublin we have programs tailored to polyamide.
We offer, among others:
- Delicate washing of tights and underwear,
- specialist "down" program for down jackets,
- DWR reproofing on jackets and sportswear or ski wear.
Instead of guessing temperature and risking your favorite item, check our price list. Prices for individual services are listed there in detail, starting from approximately 40 PLN for jacket washing.
Before you decide yourself
Check the label for no-chlorine and no-tumble-dry symbols before washing an unusual nylon item at home. A short conversation with the laundry before washing costs less than an irreversibly ruined jacket.
Nylon care rules by item type
Tights and underwear
Washing at 30-40 degrees on a delicate program is safe for most light everyday polyamide.
Down jackets and sleeping bags
The "down" program with a commercial drum dryer and dryer balls breaks up clumped down and restores its insulating power.
Bleaching
Chlorine attacks the fiber's amide bonds and causes permanent yellowing, which is why chlorine bleach is off-limits for polyamide.
Laminates and membranes
Items with a functional layer need low-heat drying or no-heat drying so the membrane isn't damaged.
Now you know the theory. Practice can be less forgiving.
If you would rather not risk your favourite piece, leave it to the specialists at Gorące Żelazko laundry in Lublin.

Polyamide is a thermoplastic: under heat it first softens, then melts within a narrow temperature range, instead of gradually scorching like natural fibers. PA6 already softens at 215-220 degrees, PA6.6 at 255-265 degrees, both below typical iron settings for cotton or linen.
