*A quick reference for when every hour counts before an important event*

Imagine this situation: you pull a velvet dress or blazer from the closet a day or two before a wedding or New Year's Eve. You see clear crease marks from the hanger, and a slight musty smell after months in the closet.

Those marks are flattened pile, short fibers lying flat under long pressure and reflecting light differently, which is why the crushed spot looks lighter or darker than its surroundings. Don't panic: below is a quick fix that takes about fifteen minutes, without a washing machine.

If the event is in a few hours, three steps are enough, entirely without the washing machine.

1. **Steam the entire surface** Steam the entire item vertically, holding the nozzle at safe distance from fabric, without touching pile. This refreshes odor and smooths out light creases from the hanger.
2. **Brush in pile direction** With a soft natural hair brush, comb the entire surface in the direction of the hair, unifying its alignment.
3. **Spot clean dry if needed** If a fresh food or makeup stain appears just before leaving, use talc or cornstarch, as described in the stains section.

> **What to avoid right before you leave**
>
> Never iron velvet directly on the pile: heat and pressure permanently flatten the fibers and leave shiny marks that cannot be undone.
>
> Don't rub a fresh wine or juice stain with a towel, as that pushes it deeper in. Instead, press it gently with an absorbent cloth.

Plan velvet cleaning with advance notice: demand for this service has clear seasonality. It jumps in December and January, during the New Year's season, and from May through June, during wedding season. If you know you will need a refreshed dress or blazer for a specific date, book an appointment early. Don't count on availability at the last minute.

What if the event is tomorrow and the stain or crease is large?

- Take the item to the laundry during opening hours (9:00–17:00)
- Do not experiment at night on your own: nighttime improvisation on a valued dress rarely ends well

## Storage between seasons

Checklist preventing creases and mold in pile

Protect velvet and velour from crushing, mold and fading before the item goes into the closet for the next season. Dense pile retains moisture longer than a smooth weave, so poor storage shows up on it faster than on cotton or linen.

A few simple habits are enough, and the checklist below helps you avoid problems before they appear.

### Storage conditions for velvet and velour

- **Relative humidity**: 45-55 percent RH, away from bathrooms and basements
- **Temperature**: cool and stable, away from radiators
- **Light**: no direct sun, especially for disperse dyes
- **How to hold it**: wide, padded hangers, never folded flat

### Storing velvet and velour between seasons

**Do**

- Hangers with wide, padded head, not thin wire
- Breathable cover from cotton or nonwoven
- Room humidity in the range of 45-55 percent RH
- Regular vacuuming of curtains and cushions with upholstery nozzle

**Don't**

- Folding velvet “into a square” for long periods: leaves permanent crushed pile lines
- PVC film as cover: traps moisture and promotes static dust attraction
- Long-term direct sunlight: fades dyes, especially disperse dyes on polyester

### Routine care for velvet and velour

- **Between-season steaming**: Every few weeks of storage, air out and lightly steam velvet or velour, nozzle a few centimeters from the fabric. This keeps closet odor from setting in and refreshes the pile.
- **Dry brushing**: A soft natural hair brush, or a latex sponge for velvet, removes dust and light soiling from the pile without disturbing its structure. Brush in one direction, following the lay of the pile.
- **Professional cleaning**: Most velvet, especially silk, carries only a dry-clean symbol on the label. Knit velour sometimes allows low-temperature machine washing, but check the label first.

> **Two humidity thresholds to remember**
>
> Above 65 percent relative humidity, mold risk grows in dense pile which retains moisture for a long time. Below 35 percent, risk of overdrying and brittleness of viscose fiber grows. The optimal range of 45-55 percent RH avoids both risks at once.

## Velvet or velour: the difference in weave

Two different structures that handle cleaning and storage differently

### Woven velvet versus knit velour

#### Woven velvet (a warp and weft fabric with dense, short pile)

- **Sheen**: deep, changing with viewing angle
- **Stretch**: low, usually no stretch

*Usually needs dry cleaning only.*

Woven velvet is made from warp and weft threads forming a dense, short pile with a deep sheen that shifts with the viewing angle. It dominates evening wear, especially in silk.

#### Knit velour (a looped-yarn knit sheared short)

- **Sheen**: softer, more even
- **Stretch**: high, natural knit stretch

*Some velour can be machine washed on a delicate cycle after checking the label.*

Velour is a knit, so it drapes better on the body and holds up to daily wear better than woven velvet. It suits fitted dresses and smart-casual clothing.

## Now you know the theory. Practice can be less forgiving.

If you would rather not risk your favourite piece, leave it to the specialists at Gorące Żelazko laundry in Lublin.

## Frequently asked questions

### Velvet or velour, which is better for an evening dress?

Evening wear definitely favors woven velvet, especially silk, for its deeper sheen and more luxurious feel than knit velour. Velour, as a knit, is more elastic and practical but doesn't give the same luminous sheen with angle. If elegance matters, choose velvet, preferably silk or with stretch for comfort. Silk velvet almost always requires professional dry cleaning, so the label matters when buying.

### How to store velvet clothes so they don't get creased?

On wide, padded hangers in a breathable cotton or nonwoven cover at 45-55 percent humidity. Never fold velvet into a square for long periods.

### How to take care of velvet dress before a wedding or New Year's Eve?

Steam the entire dress or blazer vertically, nozzle 3-5 cm from fabric without touching pile: this removes odor and smooths out crease marks from the hanger. Then brush the entire surface with a soft brush in pile direction to unify fiber alignment. If a fresh stain from food or makeup appears just before leaving, use talc or cornstarch dry instead of water. The whole process takes about fifteen minutes and needs no washing machine.

### Can velvet be machine washed?

It depends on what the item is made of and what the label says. Silk velvet almost always needs dry cleaning only, while some synthetic velour allows a delicate machine cycle at low temperature, no spin. Always check the label first: the wrong home wash can ruin the pile for good.

### When should you take a velvet item to a laundry instead of cleaning it yourself?

Take the item to a professional laundry when the stain is large, fresh, or comes from grease or alcohol, when the label shows only a dry-clean symbol, or when the pile stays uneven despite brushing. Home attempts on a valuable piece often leave a permanent mark.
