# Thermoregulation and sensitive skin

*why lyocell helps with night sweats and atopic dermatitis: evidence, not promises*

Advertisements for lyocell and Tencel bedding and underwear readily mention "thermoregulation" and "antibacterial action". Some of these promises have solid numerical backing, some are oversimplifications worth clarifying so you know what you're actually paying for.

Lyocell moisture absorption is about 11-11.5%, while cotton absorbs about 7-8.5%. In practice, this means lyocell wicks moisture from your body roughly 50% more effectively than cotton, which genuinely explains the popularity of this fiber in bedding and nightwear.

Much more caution is needed with the claim of "antibacterial". Lyocell doesn't have natural, active biocidal properties, such as silver ion additives in some technical fabrics. What actually happens is low moisture retention on the fiber surface: moisture is quickly drawn into the structure, which limits bacterial growth responsible for unpleasant odor. The effect is real, but the mechanism is physical, not chemical.

Similarly, it's worth verifying where allergy risk comes from. It usually doesn't come from the cellulose fiber itself, but from chemical residues after dyeing and finishing, such as azo dyes or formaldehyde in non-iron finishes. That's why the **OEKO-TEX® Standard 100** certificate, not the fiber type alone, is the marker of safety for a particular batch of fabric for sensitive skin.

### Lyocell and moisture: numbers instead of promises

- **Moisture absorption (lyocell)**: ~11-11.5%
- **Moisture absorption (cotton)**: ~7-8.5%
- **Thermoregulatory advantage over cotton**: approximately 50% more effective moisture wicking
- **OEKO-TEX® Standard 100**: most TENCEL™ certified, no harmful substances above limits
- **Asthma Allergy Nordic**: some TENCEL™ lines additionally certified for allergy sufferers

> If you work a shift system, for example in a hospital, emergency room, or public administration in Lublin, and struggle with night sweats after a day shift, lyocell or Tencel bedding or underwear is a practical thermoregulatory solution, not just a premium aesthetic choice. Higher moisture absorption translates into genuine comfort during sleep at unusual hours.

## Is lyocell worth the price

durability with proper care versus cost of alternatives

Taken together, the numbers in this article add up to a concrete answer, not a vague "it depends". With proper care, that is, low temperature, gentle program, and avoiding chlorine, lyocell is more durable than viscose and comparable to cotton in terms of resistance to repeated washing.

The price is higher than regular viscose and this is no accident. It's made up of more expensive NMMO solvent production with closed-loop recovery, FSC and TÜV Austria certificates, and real thermoregulatory properties described in the moisture section.

One caveat is worth repeating honestly. Lack of evidence for "active antibacterial" properties should not itself be a reason for a premium, because the mechanism limiting odor is low moisture retention on the fiber surface, not biocidal action.

- **85%** Wet strength (Against viscose (45-55%) this is a clear advantage in durability during machine washing.)
- **+50%** Higher moisture absorption than cotton
- **>99%** NMMO solvent recovery (Closed production loop, Lenzing data.)
- **TÜV Austria** Biodegradability and compostability certificate

The value of a material ultimately depends on care, not just the label. This is a natural transition to the last question: when is it worth caring for lyocell yourself, and when does it make more sense to leave it to a professional.

## Now you know the theory. Practice can be less forgiving.

If you would rather not risk your favourite piece, leave it to the specialists at Gorące Żelazko laundry in Lublin.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is tencel ecological?

The production process recovers over 99% of NMMO solvent in a closed loop, and the raw material comes from certified plantations. These are real, measurable facts, although it's worth separating them from marketing generalities.

### Is tencel biodegradable?

Yes, LENZING™ Lyocell and Modal fibers have TÜV Austria certification confirming biodegradability in soil and water, and industrial and home compostability. Exact breakdown time in weeks is not clearly published.

### Is bamboo lyocell greenwashing?

The name can be misleading. In most cases "bamboo lyocell" is actually bamboo viscose, made by a more chemical process than true lyocell.

### Is it worth buying tencel bedding?

Yes, if you care about thermoregulation and moisture absorption about 50% higher than cotton, which genuinely improves sleep comfort with night sweats. The condition is one: you must follow the washing regime at 30-40 degrees Celsius without chlorine and without high spin speeds, otherwise the bedding will quickly pill.
